Casey Ferrand (WTDN) – The Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. (New Orleans Alphas), spent the afternoon feeding first responders and hospital staff in New Orleans who are on the front lines protecting and serving the community in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our Alpha Brothers are always trying to determine the best way to impact our community in a positive way,” said Brother Jonathan Stewart, Sigma Lambda Chapter President. “I would like to thank our Vice President, Brother Manson, and Gulf Coast Bank for the leadership and resources to make this service event possible.”

The fraternity members provided more than 100 meals to New Orleans Police Officers, New Orleans Firefighters, and New Orleans East Hospital Staff to thank and encourage them as they continue to sacrifice and serve residents.

“I am extremely grateful for the outpouring of support for our New Orleans East Hospital providers and staff shown by community organizations, like Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, as we continue to battle COVID 19,” said Dr. Takeisha Davis, President and CEO of New Orleans East Hospital.

The New Orleans Alpha chapter has a strong record of service and advocacy in the city having led and mobilized advocacy around the Unanimous Jury Ballot Measure, removal of Confederate Monuments, voting, and seniors citizens. The local Chapter also raises thousands of dollars to award scholarships to high school males headed to college.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., founded December 4, 1906 at Cornell University, is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country.

Since 1925, Sigma Lambda Chapter has been a pillar in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the City of New Orleans. The chapter boasts building on a strong legacy by continuing to prioritize brotherhood, service, leadership, and achievement. From A.P. Tureaud and Dutch Morial to Emmett Bashful and Charles Teamer, Sr., the men of Alpha Phi Alpha have stood up and helped lead at defining moments in our city for close to 95 years.
